Some Excuses and If You Want It, Black Rooster It #4

Hi all.

I have to apologize for my unplanned blogging hiatus...was totally out of my control.

Monday was spent in emergency with my little big guy...after skinning half his body on Sunday morning thanks to a new pair of 'go fasters' that went waaaaay too fast, he accidentally whipped a bucket of sand in his face and ended up with a nasty eye infection and scratched cornea...so not fun.

And on top of that, I found myself admitted at the same time with some eye craziness of my own.

I suffer from chronic migraines and they're not fun or typical...they seem more like tension headaches because I sort of have them to varying degrees all the time...except when I'm preggers...they magically disappear then, which is part of the reason I adore being knocked up...anyhoo...the stupid things came back about a week ago and I'm not a happy camper to say the least. Part of what I get is weird eye disturbances like sensitivity to light and different sized pupils...on Monday, just before taking dude to the hospital I had a crazy ass aura and it scared me half to death because I've never had one before...the only way I describe it is to say it was like my right eye on acid and decided to put on a magic drug induced light show just for fun...zig zaggy neon lights striping across my eyeball...I seriously thought I was having a stroke or something...my hypochondriac tendencies drove me into an anxiety pit that had self-diagnosed brain tumours, hemorrages, and bleeds happening at lightening speed...again...very much not fun.

Thankfully, the doctor put my mind pretty much at ease and assured me it was a classic migraine aura and not to worry.  The strange thing is though, I never get a classic migraine headache...it's more like constant face aching and my eye with the funny pupil feels strained.

Anyways...it sucks but could be worse so I'll try not to whine about it anymore...any of you peeps ever have something similar?  Safety in numbers as it were;)

So, that was Monday's excuse.

As for yesterday, I woke up to find my internet down...silly Bell disconnected our network by mistake when updating our plan so I was without computer goodness for about 24 hours...let me just say that being home all day with kids and without the internet is ICE-O-LAY-TING...

I did not enjoy it.

Thankfully, we're back in gear and just in time for Wednesday's edition of...


...and since I gave you nadda for 4 days, I figure I should probably make this one good so I'm going with this classically loved living room as inspiration...


...and here it is Black Rooster styles...

You'll notice that I made the console table woody instead of black...wanted to make sure I got that organic element in there...and for behind the settee, I used two benches that definitely have the same artisan flair as the original...also, the ceiling fixture is definitely different but gives the room the same colour tones as the original and adds the same hit of drama.

All in all, she's pretty close and proof again that most any space can be put together with one stop Black Rooster shopping.

  1. Oh man, I get severe migraines as well. It mostly affects the right side of my head, behind my eyes and just recently I've been getting terrible face pain along with it. I've never had a migraine aura which, after reading your description sounds quite scary. I hope you are feeling better and getting lots of rest Christine! On another note, I love your board...especially that gorgeous mirror!

  2. Oh honey I'm so sorry! Bless you and your baby big boy! I too get migraines and have not really ever had a full aura per se, but I do get the light squiggles dancing in my vision. Hope y'all get better soon!

  3. I'm so sorry to hear about your little guy and about your migraines! Truly awful. Headaches are actually the worst so I can't imagine that!

    And...black rooster is amazing. Just saying. They have everything! This recreate was especially good.

  5. I get migraines too.....suckage!!!! I slur my words, get blurry vision and then of course the nausea and blinding pain. Just yesterday I refilled what I refer to as my magic pill. It's $75 per pill (if you don't have any coverage) but literally my worst migraines are gone in 20-40 min after taking it. It's called Relpax. Lord, get yourself some!!
    Ps hope M's eye is feeling better. Corneal ulcers/scratches are awful.

  6. Oh Christine! I can unfortunately relate. I had 2 bad car accidents 6 months apart in 2011 that left me with debilitating migraines 15-18 days out of the month for well over a year. Started the blog as my "sanity project" amongst all the daily physio, etc. I SO feel your pain! Amongst all of the injuries I sustained, the migraines were one of the worst things I walked away with. They really do mess with your head in more ways than one! You are most definitely not alone. I had a KILLER one last night myself. But here's to rising above and being fabulous, despite the pains real life can throw at us! xo

  7. Luckiy I have never had a migraine, but I know other who suffer, it's not nice. I hope you are feeling better soon & that Mac's knees & eyes are on the mend too!

  8. I'm so sorry that you've been put through the ringer lately!

    I get migraines with auras, about three a year, usually when I'm stressed or fatigued. In my right eye I see a circular zigzag that keeps growing until it's gone, then the pain/nausea sets in. I'm used to it now, but it's definitely scary while I'm driving or with the kids by myself.

    The best thing for me is to IMMEDIATELY take a migraine med, like Excedrin Migraine or Advil Migraine and LAY DOWN in a dark room. If I try to keep going through it, it makes it much worse. If I follow these steps I can usually ward off the worst of it.

    I hope they don't get worse for you! And I hope you're all feeling better soon!

  9. I get migraines with auras since I was a teenager. The aura part is almost worse than the pain. It starts as a spec and slowly takes over all of my eyesight rendering me practically blind for almost an hour. Luckily the migraines always follow a path, aura, pain for 2-3 hours, nausea, extreme hunger. At least I can count on a timeframe. I also have what they call background headaches, which is basically where I have a headache all the time. Fun stuff. Hope you're feeling better and little big guy is well also!

  11. So sorry to hear about your son and your migraines! I've had migraines for over 15 years and wish like hell they would go away. The prescription meds I am on do help. I take 1/2 of a 2.5mg Zomig + an Advil. It's a combo my doc put together. It helps in addition to eating healthy (no processed foods), drinking lots of water, exercising and avoiding stress. I'm not so great at the last thing, but I try! I hope you and your son continue to get better!

  13. Can totally relate. I have always been a constant headache kinda girl. I call them the 'dull roars.' Sort of skoffed at the folks claiming migraines b/c living with daily headaches since 4th grade sort of makes you think you are an expert on the subject. Until I had my baby. About a month after delivery I started getting migraines - intense, projectile puking, think-I-am-stroking-out kind of pain. They came frequently and violently. Meds did not work. Upon the advice of my OB, I started tracking them - aligned with my period coming back. Severe hormonal changes from post-preg and the return of menstruation combined the ripe old age of 36! Estrogen crashing - the OB called it. I started taking Advil for the 3 days around the start of my period (2 in morning and 2 at night) as a preventive (which is the best way to ward them off, I'm told). If that didn't do the trick than I would take an Estrogen pill (super low low low dose) and that nipped it in the bud. Eventually once my hormones were back in control (about 12 months) the migraines began to ebb and just the dull roars are what I contend with now - which are so much more manageable. Never had an aura but definitely the light sensitivity. I too would think that I was dying. Hope the info helps a bit. Everyone is different but I thought your timing and age sounded similar to me so might be worth tracking your cycle. Also dehydration is a huge set off for my headaches.

  14. Here's safety in numbers for you. Our migraine stories are super similar.
    Had them horrible and frequent up until I had my kids. After babies, hardly ever. A couple of weeks ago, a light started in the vision in my right eye. Grew so bright it was like someone was shining a flashlight directly into it. Never had that kind of aura before; only the floating dots and sidelights. Then I started having a hard time thinking of words. Feeling flighty. After these symptoms subsided, my right hand went numb from the palm down. Now I'm starting to freak so my intern and I google stroke symptoms and do the tests. Pass with flying colors so I feel a bit better but at this time numbness moves from right hand to lips. I call hubby and let him know I'm feeling odd and probably don't want to go out that night as planned. He asks if I need to go to ER and I tell him I don't think so. Intern asks if she should drive me home but at this point all symptoms are gone, so I decide to drive myself. About half way home, I feel like I am having a hard time swallowing and can't breathe. Seriously freaking out at this point whether I should pull over & dial 911 or just get home; I decide to go home. Call hubs, tell him what's going on and that yes, I do think I should go to ER.

    At ER, they check my BP and its crazy high. It's normally low. They do cat scan, EKG, chest X-ray. Find nothing wrong. Due to family history and the fact that i had been on an airplane in the last week (who knew that was a risk factor?) they Decide to admit me for more testing and monitor all night. BP returns to normal by morning and no abnormalities during the night. None of the symptoms have returned. They do an MRI, echocardio, and ultrasound of my carotid. They tell me all looks very healthy. Official diagnosis: migraine. Even though I had no headache, those are symptoms and with my history that's what they think. The car episode was a panic attack over the whole thing.

    So you're not alone in the wacky and unexplained migraine department, and panicking about it. Hope this gives you a little peace about it. xoxo

  15. I'm a little late posting this - but so sorry about the migraines! I have actually only had one full-blown migraine headache, but have had the visual auras for about 10-12 years. I typically get them anywhere from 2-10 times a year (depending on things like my stress level, how long I'm spending in front of a computer/with fluorescent lights, etc.). Mine most often start as either a dancing black dot, or as a dark crescent that seems to grow larger and larger until I only have a pin-point of tunnel vision. I have once or twice had a similar "psychedelic" experience though, which really threw me since it wasn't my norm. Regardless, they are so frightening and really stop you dead in your tracks for a while.

    I went through a particularly difficult and stressful time about a year ago, and was having them so often that I started also having panic attacks along with them, which would raise my stress level, lead to more frequent auras, etc... it really became a vicious cycle. Now I know that it's much better for me to immediately stop what I'm doing, and get somewhere quiet and dark and focus on keeping myself calm with deep breathing and other relaxation techniques. I've also found that the more I minimize my caffeine and red wine consumption (a soda/tea or cup of coffee a day now - decaf whenever possible, and white seems to be fine) I really have far, FAR fewer (I've heard these are common triggers). Be sure to take care of yourself and get lots of rest! Xo
