To Runner or Not to Runner ???

Good Tuesday Morn everyone.

I'd like your thoughts on something please.

By now, you've all seen photos of my foyer.

I'm not going to post another picture of it because of that little TV thing I told you about yesterday.

I'd love to fill you in on all the details of said appearance, but I can't...not yet anyways.

What I can say is that parts of my house are going to featured on a national (Canadian) show and it's being shot next week...airs on the 15th...and don't fret my international friends...you'll be able to watch it online;)

Anyhoo...for that reason, I'm going to attempt this post with no photos of my abode.

Also, I'm not going to talk about something that is driving me a little crazy like coco puffs this morning, for the same reason...what I will say on that issue though, is comparing a DIY project of mine to something you'd see on Pottery Barn Teen is literally akin to driving a stake through my heart...just mean Mr or Ms commenter, mean!!

Tangents, tangents...back to the topic at hand.

I'd like to one day add a runner to my staircase...you know this one...

haha...I kid...how I wish that was mine- dream hallway.

Focusing on my actual foyer now...

I love the idea of a little colour to soften all the brown that a wood floor creates.

Don't get me wrong, I actually LOVE wood floors but I prefer them with layered with carpety goodness.

So...I need to know what your thoughts on runners are.

I gathered some inspiration to help you decide.

First, there's the traditional route...

This one reminds me of my hallway because of the black and white paper...sisal definitely works...

but I want something to break up the brown barrage..and sisal is kind of brown...i.e. not helping the so much.

So...let's see about some pattern perhaps...you know I LOVE animal prints...

The antelope is interesting but...brown:(

And we've all seen this one below...cue heart going pitter patter...

Pinned Image

The trouble is, I already have a LOT of leopard and I do believe that too much of a great thing, can be a bad thing so...

How about a different kind of pattern?

In neutral 'ish' colours perhaps...

Pinned Image

The grey/white with those pinky perfect benches is pretty.

This black, grey and white one is pretty fab...though I think it would give me a severe case of vertigo...

Pinned Image

You know I'm obsessed with the KW geniusness below...the pseudo zebra is HOT...but, I've got beaucoup amounts of black and white...though I adore that runner...and paint...and everything.

Pinned Image

There's also the option of a more colourful approach to the pattern idea...

But perhaps not this much colour....

Or maybe a solid colour is the answer....

This foyer is HEAVEN....

Pinned Image

as is this one....

and Orange is apparently the colour of the year but um...I don't really like it so no to that...though those stairs are kind of amazing.

You know what other staircase is kind of perfection?

This one...

See how happy the owners are?

It's because they have a fuschia runner and it's INCREDIBLE!!!

I want, I want.

That's the winner in my eyes.

What say you?

Would the fuschia be to gothariffic with my black and white chairs?

Or the perfect pink/but not too pink accent.

Tell me please.

I'm all ears.

xo

  1. I was anti-runner for awhile, I liked the look of the exposed wood but we came around to the idea of installing a runner, and I'm SO glad that we did it. I'm all for a little added punch of fun via it. We went with a stripe that is youthful but I think classic enough to carry through the years:

  2. Runner for sure! I love many of the inspiration shots Christine!

  3. I love stair runners. In fact, I'd love a sisal one for our stairway which goes downstairs. However, I tend to play it safe (with the whole sisal choice). I'm sure the fuscia would look awesome!

  4. I've been loving them too. A lot. I think they would suck to have to vaccuum, b/c vaccuuming stairs blows, but that's why we get a cleaning lady right? :) Annnnd what's this about PBTeen?

  5. I'm sorry, I'm still stuck on PB teen. What???

For your stairs I want camel/taupe greek key. Oops was that not an option? I'm so bad with directions :)

Fuchsia is super hot but it's very bold and your entry is so gorgeously layered... I'm not sure.

I have no doubt you'll pick the best one though.

  6. ours is black (SO fun saying that!!!) and i quite like it. a color would be amazing -- just make sure it's one that you won't tire of soon!

  7. Wow, I had no idea there were so many options! I love stripes, but a solid colour would look great too. Can't wait to see what you go with.

  8. Love the Fushia idea! Second for me is that black and whit pattern...yummy! On pins and needles waiting to find out the TV show :)

  9. if anyone could pull it out it could be you!

  10. Anyone who would compare you to PB teen obviously knows nothing about design, so don't fret about that. It sounds to me like you know which one is your favorite and upon the solid bright colored runners I immediately thought it looked like you!

  11. WHAT THE WHAT??? Um, I've seen PBteen and it doesn't look a *thing* like anything I've seen come out of your brilliant design brain. Jealousy. That's what it boils down to. Ha! I don't even know what we're talking about yet! But I do think that fuschia runner is *DIVINE*...and the furthest thing from PBteen (c:

  12. i think they work and honestly help protect the stairs in a stylish way! though i have to add i don't have runners... but i think that has more to do with budgeting.
and that last picture- they are just so happy because clearly he has grabbed her butt. so don't take it at face value. :)

  14. I think that the striped ones are it for me...I love the movement that you get as they wrap around each stair and on those stars that round a corner or have a landing...just perfect!
Thanks for the inspiration and congrats on the show!

  15. I LOVE the fuscia! And the eggplant is also fab! Your house is so fantastic that anything you pick is going to look perfect!

  16. LOVE a runner! I feel like stairs aren't fully dressed until they have a runner. That being said, I live in a rental so I don't get to make these choices. I'm into the fuschia.

  18. I also love a good leopard, and I too have one as a runner on my staircase. I give this one a vote for sure!
The grey with the white inset banding on the outer edges is still beautiful, but on the safer side. But in the end I think the Zebra would be divine!

  19. Hi New to your blog :)

I love the animal print ones, they are fun but not everyone would be bold enough to pull something like that off. The Fucshia one is beautiful!! I think black, white and any time of purple always looks sophisticated and rich. Go for it!

  20. totally agree!!! i think a solid color is easier on the eyes and looks a touch for refined in my opinion, but you can totally have fun with the color. i love the idea of a fun jewel tone like that fuchsia!

  21. Leopard runner! I recently outfitted my client's spiral staircase with spots and not only do I love it, she seriously DIES over it every time she comes home...and since you've got tons of inspiration, I think it's right up your alley too!

  22. Love the leopard and love a solid with a stripe on either side but the very bold bright ones, I am afraid you would tire of very quickly and its not a cheap endeavor to pay for the carpet and the labor.....think in the long run and think about what will work both downstairs AND upstairs! That fun geometric is kind of fun too...as long as it won't make you dizzy. I like a runner for the way its softens and warms a staircase and obviously for the traction ( practicality always helps too)!

  23. I love the idea of leopard, but know what you mean about too much leopard. I also think the neutral grey/white combination could look really striking - especially paired with your gorgeous accent pink! That is so exciting about your tv appearance - can't wait to see it! xx

  24. wow! soooo many great choices. i very much need a cool runner for my stairs as well. thanks for the great ideas! i personally really, really love the orange with the orange stripe. what if you did fuschia with said stripe??

  25. Your post is absolutely stunning.

I am the "Ask the Designer" on the Karastan Carpet website, as well as have my own design firm and blog.
I get asked this question all the time. Here are a few of my top hints:
-No sisal: unforgiving, hard on the feet, stains easily
-No metal bars in the back of the kick - easy to stub your toes.
-Stripes - you have to be careful because the carpet does move on the steps so if you are a fanatic, forget stripes
-Solids: too boring and shows lint easily
    So what to do?
    Whatever you like.
But those images are really awesome.
    Thanks for the inspiration Christine!
