I Love Logs

I want logs in my family room- does it matter that I have a gas fireplace?
And what about the bugs- people keep telling me that there would be bugs...surely there's a way around this.

My love affair with stacked wood isn't a new one but it's an increasing obsession.
Mostly because of this...

Emma's house...aka the Marion House Book...it's about to show up in print a la House and Home and holy Dinah...it's good...really, really good.
That mirror, against the black chandy...and the modern furniture with the gorgeous architecture...le sigh...totally my idea of heaven...her whole house leaves me completely speechless.
And then, back to my main point, there's the wood..I just freaking love the wood- it perfectly balances the ornate gold mirror by bringing in some raw texture...it keeps the whole space from getting too glamorous and instead, makes it so much more interesting and dynamic...I want some...and I even have a little dead space on the left of my fireplace that is too small for anything else...see...

on the left over in between the window and the fireplace...it looks more crunched up in this photo than it is in real life- there is actually space there.
If I took the dive with the log idea, I'd likely re-appropriate that coffee table elsewhere, which would give even more room and leave that stacked logs as the only raw wood.

So what say you?
Logs?
And just in case you're not sure of your vote, here's a few more shots of  pretty wood stacking...and PS, I have no idea why this is happening today but whenever I try to blow up the pictures like I do every other day, they end up blurry...temporary blogger bizarrity I suppose...so for today, the images are smallish:(

Yes...no???

  1. Ohhh I say YES!! And I totally agree about moving the coffee table. You could even do birch logs?? I love how modern and clean birch is. But maybe not the raw balance you are looking for?

  3. I'd say yes, why not? If you don't like it you can always remove them later! Now got start chopping some wood, it's a good workout!

  5. Oh, there must be a way to get out of pest problems to achieve this stunning look! I say go for it, and be sure to show us the results. xoxo

  6. I think it would be the perfect touch in your room, GO for it. Surely the bugs aren't that bad?

  7. Love these looks! I think you should go for it! You've inspired me to try stacking the logs in my downstairs fireplace which doesn't even work.

  8. Ha! I don't know why - your post title cracked me up! Immature humor, I suppose.
I say, YES - go for it!
As for bugs...do you have Cedar trees up there? If so, they contain a natural bug-repellent. If not, perhaps there is a tree in a similar family you could use.

    P.S. - Every time I see your living room, I 1) Melt 2) Turn a tad pea green ;)

  9. Yep Logs! I have a huge stack of them beside my lower gas fireplace. Mine are Birch and I left them in the garage for a bit first to de-bug. DO it! They'll look great! xo

  10. Uh-oh. I kind of want some stacked logs in my kitchen now. This could turn into log fever! Maybe the answer is a chic bug zapper. Okay not.

  11. I just had this same thought! I have gas too but I thought an old box with wood in it would be awesome! I say if you want it, then do it! No one will care!

    We have some skinny logs:

My husband suggested we use them as firewood in the outside firebowl...I am not ready to let them go!

I am totally lusting after Emma's House right now too!

  14. Funny I love them too! With or without a fireplace, guess its that inate desire to bring the outdoors in and have that woodsy beautiful smell and the gorgeous earthy color of browns that makes a space feel like one with the outdoors.....love it too!

  16. perfect timing for this post, as I was just going to have to search images of logs in fireplaces to show my clients. Thanks for doing the work for me ;)

They disconnected their gas fireplace, so we are lucky that we can stick the logs inside. I prefer this look to sticking them next to the fireplace, but I understand that isn't always possible.

  17. Definitely yes, I'm in on your obsession...there is just something wonderful about it...a natural element? The texture? The bugs? I don't know, but it's fabulous! (c: I kinda love the painted logs, too...cute touch!

  20. I'm definitely FOR logs, specially after all the wonderful images You showed. Nowadays, I'm sure there's a wood treatment, otherwise the owners of all those homes wouldn't have taken them into their houses. However, if you can't find a solution (sorry that I can't help), a design came to my mind. It's not that I love it, but i have to accept it's practical. 26. You're too funny. Go for it baby!

  27. I love the logs!! Don't know about the bugs...but may try this at my new place! Take care, Caroline

  28. Yep, I do like the log idea... I wouldn't go up to the ceiling with them though! A neat little stack would be pretty cool.

As for the photos, if they are small to start with, they look blurry the more they are blown up because there are not enough pixels in the image to display properly... I personally prefer small over blurry! Hope that helps :)

  29. Heck, yeah! Love the leaving them in the garage de-bugging tip, Erica. Who knew? Totally doesn't matter that you have a gas fireplace. You can toss them in, they'll still burn (I think) or you can turn the gas off and just burn them old school, no?

Enjoy! Hubby and I will be moving into our condo in January (we've been renting it out) and the thing I'm most excited about is our fireplace!!!!! I'll be joining you in log land.

  30. LOVE these images. That's what I need. And I would love to have a fireplace, too. Want one SO badly.

  31. Big YES on the logs! So pretty displayed in tidy stacks. I have two wood burning fireplaces in my home and love them. I know gas is easier and less mess, but I love to hear the fire crackling!

  32. I've always loved that look as well. I wanted to have logs inside but as you alluded to, my husband also has the bug phobia. I remember once seeing a fabulous niche for firewood lined in stainless. I wonder if that would help alleviate the bug issue! As for your space, I think you should go for it. What's the worse that happens? You take the logs back outside. Thank you for all the beautiful inspiration! Have a great weekend!

  33. YES...I am so glad you did this post I have a parade house that needs logs and these are perfect inspiration!

  34. I say yes! Would give your space that earthy meets glam feel!

  35. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea Christine, and I have never heard about the problem with bugs?!? I say it's going to bring the perfect textural layer to the room. Rustic glam all the way baby!!

  36. I totally love that look...and have seen them painted white! Somebody told me that it can attract spiders and maybe roaches...that cured me. Not trying to rain on the parade here....

  37. Um, no -- bugs, big time.
