Kitchen on the Brain

As the new year approaches, thoughts of my upcoming kitchen redo are starting to swim crazily around in my head.
I'm starting to obsess about the details, look, money...all of it.
I've been collecting inspiration pictures forever and wanted to share some thoughts/ideas I have so far.

You see dear readers, I need help.
Too many choices, too little time.
Here's what I've got so far.

This kitchen by Kara Mann is my favourite one I've seen in terms of overall feel and look.  I adore the clean cabinets and how they aren't dripping in fussy corbels and kick plates etc. I also love the simple stove hood.  The grey is almost exactly the colour I'm thinking of and I want a marble for both the counters and backsplash as is done here.
All in all, I love this one and I think it's going to be my main inspiration shot.
I'd like to take this and make a few changes.

To begin with, I'd like some open shelving.
Maybe something like these shelves used in Linda Reeves kitchen.

I love the idea of a bit of feminine being added with the shelf detail, while still maintaining a clean and modern kitchen.  I also love how the open shelving gives you the opportunity to add artwork above.

Here are some other of my favourite kitchens that have open shelving.

I adore the clay tile detail wall  and how clean but still pretty the kitchen is.

I really like the idea of building the stove into its own box - gives the kitchen a bit of a restaurant feel.  Having open shelves on either side with plates would be so handy. As well, I love love the marble vent- I am so over the elaborate over played stove hood- this one is perfectly elegant in my mind.

A few others with well executed shelving.

Love this kitchen by Sally Wheat- it's a bit more traditional than I am going for but I still really appreciate the details and feel of it...and the grey.

Maybe just a simple marble shelf?

Along with the open shelves, I'd also like a rolling ladder.
I'm short and I will never be able to reach those upper cabinets- plus I love the look of them so that's a win win.

The other element I'd like to add is some glass front cabinets with wallpaper.

{also loving the subway tile in this space- adds a bit of vintage charm to the kitchens}

Or a large glass unit made to look like a piece of furniture...reminiscent of an old apothecary chest etc.

Or even better, an actual giant vintage piece of furniture that could be used for storage.

As for the cabinet door design, I'd like it fairly simple and was also thinking that a long lean profile might be nice.

And finally, the hardware/sink/faucet.
I have tentatively picked these gold pulls (the long ones 2nd from the top) for the cabinets and adore them.

I need a little glamour in the room and I think this fits the bill.

Here's a picture of a kitchen I love that has gold hardware.

I prefer the look of the gold on grey or charcoal cabinets so that is likely the way we'll go.

And lastly, I am thinking of this amazing Kohler Karbon faucet.
The very talented Summer Thonrton just used it in her kitchen and I've been obsessed with it ever since.

Here it is in her gorgeous newly renovated space.
Did I mention that I love her black cabinets, counters, sink, hardware...all of it?

And to finish this kitchen workbook post, here's a bathroom.
I know it seems a little crazy but for whatever reason, this bathroom from last month's Elle Decor has got my mind spinning.
If a bathroom could turn into a kitchen, this would be mine.

I ADORE every single detail in this space and when it comes to design time, this picture will be at the top of my ever increasing file.

So I think you can probably see why I need some help- I'm totally all over the place with this one.
Any thoughts you may have would be so very appreciated.

And aside from that, I hope you all have a fabulous day.
{and PS, I'm sick again and am using that as an excuse as to why I didn't credit all of these photos- a little break for me on that front}

Christine, so many gorgeous photos. I too have trouble deciding on a direction for my own decor.

My two cents? Based on your photos, I think you're looking for clean profile or shaker style cabinets in a light grey finish with gold hardware. Next to your stove, I would do some open shelving for display or storage and perhaps a statement tile or an inset of statement tile. I would incorporate a standalone piece in the style of your cabinets with glass fronted uppers for display and dish storage (maybe even lined with a modern wallpaper!). And for the countertops - carrera marble! It's going to be fabulous!

Love these images! I know exactly how you feel about trying to make decisions when reovating a kitchen. It took me forever to pick almost everything but I am thrilled with the results and you will be with yours too!

Wallpaper backed glass cabinets are on my to do list for our house. I am a traditional girl so I am in love with the shelves in the Sally Wheat photo. Also I am a huge fan of vintage furniture made to look like built ins.

Can't wait to see the results!!

Wonderful inspiration images!!!! Very similar to what I would want my kitchen to look like.
Something that I always suggest to my clients when doing a complete re-model is choose timeless elements for the stable/structural pieces. And as for the pops of color or pattern, bring that in through accessories and accent walls, just in case 2 years down the road your vision changes!! Cant wait to see beginning design stages and the final outcome!!!!

wow! after all those varying inspiration pics i am confused too!! no wonder!
i am down with the marble backsplash and counters. classic and worth every penny. plus i think the counters and backsplash should be seamless.
i am also down with some open cabinetry..i will say that i think the open shelves should be as far away from the stove as possible. the cooking steam and grease will make anything you put on those shelves very dirty.
i am sure this kitchen will be gorgeous no matter which direction you go in..

I can't wait to see what you decide! I tend to go modern and simple in kitchens. I love open shelving, but only if you know you can keep them neat and edited (I can't).

Yeah, I'm confused too. You can't go wrong with these photos for inspiration. I have to say that the first 3 are my favorite. Def go for the ladder. I will say that I have marble countertops and backsplash, LOVE LOVE, but just know they really DO stain as easily as you hear. I don't regret them, but feel I should mention it to you. I also really love those upholstered stools in the 2nd or 3rd pic to soften things up. And lastly, if I could design it again I too would throw in some open shelves. Good luck. I CAN'T wait to watch it all come together.

I love the kitchens you choose for inspiration. The marble shelves would be pretty amazing, and it hasn't been done a whole lot. Have you seen Kohler's beveled single bowl sink? It is undermount, and a cutting board can slide across, I think it would look amazing with that faucet.

Good Luck!

I saved so many of these! I would love to do open shelves but then I would have to get all new white dishware and I don't want to do that. I love all the marble but it's soooo expensive. But if you have the money it's a great way to go. The gray cabinets with the gold hardware is a solid win. Great choice. And with the library ladder, if you have the space definitely go for it! I always like the look of the island either being a piece of furniture or being a different color than the rest of the cabinets or with a different countertop so maybe you could do that?

Thanks everyone- your comments are so helpful.
eyeseepretty- thanks for your thoughts- love the idea of a freestanding display unit.
Sarah- I like the wallpaper idea as well- easy way to get some colour/pattern into the kitchen.
Margaret- totally agree- I want the cabinets and fixed pieces to be simple and somewhat classic so that I can be assured that I'll still like them down the road.
MFAMB- I know right! I'm actually a little annoyed with myself because usually my 'ecclectic' (kind of hate that word but can't think of a better one) style is easier for me to achieve but for some reason with kitchens, I like too much of everything- it's harder to narrow down. I think your thoughts about the shelves and proximity to the stove is a great point- I'd want them for pretty things display so having grease etc. around the stuff would be stupid. And as for the marble, seemless slabs is definitely what I'd be hoping for.
Belly- I love your modern kitchen and definitely want a bit of modern in mine- my house could lean too feminine if I'm not careful so want some masculin clean in the kitchen.
Chassity- I hear you- it is confusing and I thanks for your comments about the marble- I know about the staining but I just can't love anything as much...no matter how hard I try so I'm just going to have to live with it- I kind of think marble is like wood anyways- it's been used for centuries for this purpose and I think the scratching/staining adds to it's character- having said that, I'm going to try and keep my red wine habit far far away:)
Kendra- the sink I picked is the Kohler bevelled cast iron one- is that the one you're referring too? I didn't see a cutting board with it but I definitely want an undermount single bowl large sink..in white.
Brandi- the marble is really expensive but I'm willing to cut out on other things (like solid wood interiors etc,) to get it and so what if we have to eat mac and cheese for a few years to pay for it:) Thanks for the thoughts re grey and gold - I'm pretty set on that one so happy to hear you think it would be a good choice. And I totally agree about the island- I'm thinking black with a waterfall edge but we will see:)
Thanks again everyone- so helpful!

I love your ideas. I just posted the other day about my obsession with carrara marble - GO FOR IT! The gold hardware is a must as well. I'm saving that photo for my inspiration when I own a condo one day. When your kitchen is done you should make sure to pick up some gold flatware; it is so beautiful and would look great in your new kitchen. I love the open shelving idea, just make sure you have some place to hide items that aren't as pretty.

Love the idea of gray with gold hardware... it isn't done too often! Curious to see what you choose for lighting. and which wallpaper, as you know the best sources! then again I sort of see wallpaper interiors more with subway tile than with carrara. Carrara seems like it should be the star and the rest should be clean and pretty. Maybe not... if you do it, I'm sure it will look great.

So glorious! So many of these already in my inspiration files.
Currently having to tackle the kitchen at our apartment in Cairo and my mind is spinning -- hard enough to narrow love down, but then to try and do so in Egypt!
Get better soon so you can rock those fab blond bangs at midnight!
Cheers, Alcira

Cara- love the idea of some gold flatware and I totally hear you about having a place to hide stuff away- I have lots that's not pretty at all:)
Naomi- I think you might be right about the wallpaper/subway tile vs. marble/clean- one thing though, I'm actually after calacatta marble, rather than the Carrara- it's whiter overall and has distinct grey veining in it- the Carrara is more greyish and I like the contrast of the white against the grey cabinets-having said that, the Calacatta is more expensive so we'll see what the budget allows for. In any event, you point to the wallpaper has been duly noted- thanks!

Just seeing your note- thanks Alcira! How I wish I could say I was tackling my kitchen in Cairo- just sounds so glamorous!!! And thanks for the well wishes- planning on spending the day in bed so hoping I'll be a little more up for some fun by tomorrow:)

wowza. loving those images. love the gray, the marble, the open shelving and the glass-front cabinetry. very classic.

if there's an island, that might be a good place to incorporate the rustic appeal of that bathroom you love. a marble countertop would pull it together with the rest of the kitchen, and you would get your warm vintage pop.

hope you get to feeling better very soon! ox

Wow Christine, you have some amazing inspirations to go off of here. I especially love the gold hardware against the gray shelves. I'm really bad at making decisions (probably why things take forever to get changed around here), so I don't have much advice for you. I'm sure it will turn out just lovely. Can't wait to see the end result!

I have no doubt your kitchen is going to be fabulous! I have marble countertops and I love it! Even though it scratches and you have to be very careful about not getting citrus on it or it will etch, I wouldn't change it for anything. I also have matte subway tile with grey grout and love it. Dying over the knobs and pulls you chose and that faucet.. AMAZING! Can't wait to see how it all comes together!

I cannot wait to live vicariously through you, if I didn't plan on selling my condo in the next couple years I would be doing a very similar renovation right now! The first kitchen is my absolute favorite except for the light fixture. It feels too heavy and dark and industrial for that space, something more soft and feminine would have complimented it much better. And speaking of, what are you thinking for light fixtures?? Kitchen pendants might be one of my favorite things to lust over. I absolutely love all of your ideas and think the gold hardware will be such a perfect, unexpected touch. I too have been following Summer Thronton's kitchen reno and am obsessed. She is so talented, and clearly, so are you!! xo

Love your inspiration! When we were planning a white kitechen I loved the look of the carerra marble but always worried that it would be difficult to keep in good condition.

As for the open shelving, love the look but I don't think I'd have the patience to maintain them.

christine {bijouandboheme} said...

Tobe- love the idea of a more vintagy/rustic piece as the island-
TTS- I am so with you on the light fixture- it seems like such a strange choice to me to and I like you, have a major pendant obsession- I love the ones that Jenn (made by girl) used in her kitchen and my favourites are every pendant ever made by Tom Dixon- having said that, I'll already have a lot of gold so may stick with the crystal pretty I already have- especially if I go more modern in the kitchen. It will be one or the other- if the kitchen ends up being more feminine, pendants will be modern style pendants but if the cabinets are more clean, then girly with the lights. There's also those white/pink tubes from Mr. Dixon that I'm so crazy about so we'll see:) And thanks for the sweet compliment- right back at you!
Nuha, Jackie, Marianne (love subway tile and dark grout!), and Connie- thanks so much for the encouragement- I'm excited but nervous about this whole thing! Will definitely keep you all posted:)

You've got it--I think you already see it in your mind. YES--the simple marble vent hood....clean, elegant, modern--you (not overdone!) yes--gold with gray on one of the last pics--LOVE (especially I think the gold is needed with carrera marble, otherwise the silver is too cold with it. A must if you are looking for opinions! Love the gold lighting as well, but I am sure you have ideas about that, too) And, if you use the modern pulls and faucet, I agree some classic subway tiles with dark grout can give it that bit of classic. And I LOVE my open shelving. You are such a sylist--you need at least a few. Can't wait! Julie

These are almost the exact inspiration photos I would pull for myself. Identical. I absoluetly love them all. I love the look of marble like calacatta and carrara. Oh, but the third photo down with the Ann Sacks Nottingham is stunning too! So hard to narrow it down. Classic with a touch of glamour. Sounds perfect.

Hi Christine...I have saved many of your kitchen inspirations in my own folder for our kitchen re-do! Love the clean white look in kitchens...oh, the ladder is perfect too! I have never thought of a library ladder in a kitchen...it will be on my list...such a charming touch! You will do a wonderful job...you are very talented! Take care, Caroline

Beautiful pictures...every one of them. You are definitely on the right track for a classic, timeless kitchen with a little "edge"....can't wait to see the finished product...maybe a little antique mirror somewhere :)

Thanks Tamara, Danielle, Julie and a FFVD- you've all helped me feel more confident in some of my ideas:) Lovely Happenings, thanks for the source on that tilework- I wan't sure what it was so very helpful! I just had a peak at Ann Saks' website and wowzers- that tile might just be flying up the to near the top of the list- it's fabulous. And Sherry, love love the idea of an antique mirror- you know me, you can never have too many mirrors:)
You have all really helped today so thank you!!!

Love love love. And it makes me happy that you have kitchens on the brain too, my mini reno is almost complete and I am so excited! It is nothing as glamorous as your inspiration here, if I had the money I would have had marble counters and backsplash. But for a small budget my kitchen has come a long way!!

All beyond gorgeous!! Having redone my kitchen in the past year, and lived with it, here is my 2 cents and gave things:

Love my glass cabinets with fabric back. Did them in moderation and use them for stemware.

Under counter lights, pull out trash cabinet, pull outs under sink for cleaning supplies a must.

Love the large, deep left side of my sink...with I'd put the disposal in that side too!

Took out most tall lower cabinets and replaced with drawers...more than doubles your storage. Inventory your pots, pans, bakeware, etc when figuring layout. The aesthetic is what you're giddy about in the beginning, ease and functionality is what makes life easier a month after project is complete.

If I'd had the $$, I'd have placed glass front cabinets on top of existing and taken them to the ceiling. Love that look!
