My Little Bouquet and A Tour of the Mainfloor

Starting the day with my sweet Scarlett before her Halloween part at school this morning.  She says to me in the car on the way, "mommy, you sure picked a cute flower this morning."- I sure did my sweet girl:)

I'll post some more pics of both little kids in costumes on Sunday- I'm not entirely sure what the teenager is going to dress up as but will attempt to take her picture as well:)
And while we're on me and the fam, I thought now might be as good a time as any for a little house tour a la bijou. My home is definitely still a work in progress and I have big plans left for most of it.  For today, here is what the main floor looks like, starting with the living room.  And I apologize in advance for the long post- I could never work as an editor.

The walls are actually painted a lilac/pink shade- it's from Behr and is called French Heirloom.  I started the room after selling almost all of our furniture on craigslist (in a matter of weeks.)  I just wasn't happy with the mish mash of stuff we had accumulated over the years and decided to start fresh- best thing I ever did for myself and my family.  I am a much happier person now my home is the way that I like it.  I started shopping before anything was actually sold (I should have started this blog then- pure shenanigans) and began adding pieces to the room (again, before old things were even gone but whatever.)  The room's direction really started to evolve after I purchased the artwork on the fireplace, which are actually hand painted wallpaper panels; they really set the mood and colour palate for the whole room.  The story of how it all came together is much too long a one to get into now but sufficed to say, I had things shipped from everywhere and in every manner possible.   My dad once said that my house was like the UN and in a way, it is.  My first choice is always to support local business and trade but sometimes, I just can't always find what I am looking for locally.  I do a lot of online shopping and love finding special things on Craigslist or Ebay.  I have some high end items in the room but also some great budget finds.  My favourite piece in the room is the antique settee, which was purchased online and came all the way from LA- my husband actually drove to Buffalo in a rented van to pick it up; he's actually done that three times just for the living room alone- good husband:)  The rosewood credenza is also a favourite of mine.  It holds absolutely every piece of electronics we own, and does a great job and hiding everything but the kitchen sink.  The credenza and rosewood leather chairs were my late mother in laws and I truly love them- they remind me of her everyday and I feel so lucky to have them in our home.  All in all, I have to say that I love the room- it is totally me and works really well for our family...and only one thing left to change (wonder if there will ever be a time I don't say that:) I hope to eventually replace the chandelier with something white and more modern.  In my dream world, I would have a perfectly perfect white 3 armed Serge Mouille fixture lighting up the room but... that's not likely to happen so I continue my endless shopping quest and am hoping to find something similar and cheaper:)

Next, the foyer.  My main floor is made up of only three rooms- living room, hallway and kitchen (and yes dear friends, that means that there is no main floor bathroom- really great stuff- especially with three kids.)  The entrance way has started to come together but I still have plans for it.  I have ordered the wallpaper and fabric for the two french chairs and hope to purchase a new runner.   Here is how it looks now.

And lastly, the kitchen.  This is the room that I am just about to really put some time into.  I actually don't hate the way it looks now but I definitely want to give it a face lift.  Husband of course, being a man, wants nothing at all to do with painting out the wood but I really couldn't give a hoot- maybe that makes me a bad person/wife but whatever- they wood is warn and is kind of yellowy and there is just way too much of it everywhere.  I like wood just as much as the next gal (but never as much as the next guy) but I want a change.  So, I hope to paint out the cupboards (either charcoal or white,) install new hardware, put in solid (calacatta white) marble back splash and matching counter tops (and yes I know they will get stained but I still want them) and get a new huge sink.  I am also toying with the idea of knocking out the island and swinging the table around so that it sits in the middle of the kitchen.  I do use my island alot so I know this might be a bit of a risk but I like the idea of sitting right in the kitchen and having so much extra space on the ends for entertaining; our table is a little cramped right now and 8 is definitely the max for seating. If I went with that plan, the area where the table is presently would become a little seating nook- two wing chairs and round table in between them kind of thing. This possibility makes me very happy because it means I have two more chairs that I can stick one of my many fabric obsessions on- point in favour of moving the table.  Oh, and drapery- As you can see in the pictures, all that is there now is wooden California shutters.  I've selected the fabric but I'm not entirely sure what I want to do yet- definitely curtain panels on the large windows but not sure about the smaller ones.  Anyhow...here's how the kitchen looks today.

Where to start.....so different from the days of your baby blue walled room adorned with baby seal prints. Remember? lol. Anyhow, you have so much more style than I ever will. Very beautiful. Love the settee, love the mix of more modern with traditional, love the kitchen, although I agree that painted would be stunning. I would vote for a charcoal colour, although I do love my white cab's. Love the kitchen table (something I would like to have!), would be interesting to see it in the kitchen itself, but I know what you mean about the island. I use mine ALL THE TIME (it used to have a cooktop in it, but I removed it in order to get a large workspace). Floors, excellent, lighting, excellent.
The BEST of all is that cute little fresh flower in the first shot. Oh how I'd love to meet your darlings. I had old pics out the other day, showing my girls, and they were checking out the ones where I visiting you, circa 90 or 91. It made me homesick for you =(

every single square inch of your home is absolutely gorgeous! i love the leaning floor mirror, the black & white rug, the mix of different furniture finishes, the tufted ottoman cocktail table, the rosewood credenza...your colorful & graphic fabric choices on the pillows...um, yes, i love everything. i've been itching to sell our current living room furniture / art / pillows and start over! you've just motivated me to go for it. p.s. - your daughter is adorable :) thanks for the inspiring post!

Your little flower bower is the sweetest little bloom ;)
And your home is delicious, delovely, divine!
Surely it won't be long before it makes it into print form...Hello Canadian House and Home!
You've done a truly beautiful job. Your aesthetic reminds me a bit of Anna Spiro's look over at absolutelybeautifulthings, but with that modern curve ball thrown in.
Just fabulous. Maybe we should each pray for a pair or ying-yang Serge Mouille chandies -- mine in black and yours in white -- to fall out of the sky and land in our living rooms ; )
Happy Hallows to your little bouquet!

How is it that you are living in my dream home? I am seriously in love with your place. We have the same rug (ikea?) in our living area, and an almost identical credenza (dresser) in our bedroom. But most importantly...the light in your house is amazing!! Congrats!

OK, a Raina listicle:

1. Your house is effin' amazing (not sure how you feel about swears on your blog).

2. I have the EXACT SAME CHAIRS pulled up to a wood farmhouse table in my kitchen. Which obviously means you made a brilliant choice.

3. My ovaries just burst looking at your daughter in her costume. I bow to you, oh Mistress of the Superlative Halloween Craftsmanship.

A friend of mine just turned me on to your blog and I am so glad she did! Your home is just lovely. The very first thing I noticed was the beautiful framed art on the fireplace. What a wonderful source of inspiration. I can see how the room evolved from there. Thanks for sharing!

As for your gorgeous flower child. Well, I can hardly stand the cuteness. I have three boys and so I can never entertain thoughts of such a costume. She is frilly, girly perfection!

I fail to comprehend how your house can look like that with 3 kids, but i know it's true. It's changed so much since we were last there a few years ago.
But what i really want to know is where you hide all your stuff???? You should do a post on storage solutions!
p.s. i know i'm not really anonymous, but i now quite like the nickname!

Oh my goodness, this is your house?? I actually saw that first picture on another blog last week I think and I thought it was a room from a magazine. I have actually had those wallpaper panels, that you framed above the fireplace, on my wishlist for a LONG time!! They look so great in that room! Tres bien!

I am totally overwhelmed by all of your comments- thank you so so much! It is so exciting to have people come over and enjoy the blog:)
The wallpaper panels are by Nama Rococo- they are individual pieces that are printed in black and then hand painted using watercolour paint- they're called French Dot and no two are alike so they are all numbered- I'm going to post a link to the store where I bought them on Saturday for my Sat. Shopping feature.
Again, thanks so much everyone- reading all of your comments really made my day/week!!
PS- Special thanks to Raina, Paula and NKP for mentioning my blog on theirs- so appreciated!

thanks to Paula at two ellie for heading me over here. I am blown away by your house and everything that you have chosen. I have to say I would die for a kitchen like that, and maybe just putting a big rug down and painting your island would break up all the wood in the kitchen - painting those cabinets would take forever!

It's me again! I keep staring at your living room/media room. I am in total love with it! I actually just noticed that you have two Chiang Mai Dragon pillows in the alabaster color. I just sewed two of them for our living room on Friday. I keep changing our pillows, but I think this time we are going in the right direction. And I love the Kelly Wearstler imperial trellis fabric. I was afraid to add too much patterns to our living room but after seeing it works in your house, I decided to make it work in ours. I just ordered a pillow in the midnight color on etsy. I have four more pillows to sew for our house so thought a little help would be good by ordering one. I also bought a couple of wallpaper panels and will have them framed. Thanks for sharing the name of the store.

Mom23blessings, the rug is from IKEA- Stockholm rand- it's huge and heavy wool and such a reasonable price- I really love it.

mom23blessings said...

Thanks for info. I was just at Ikea on Sat and didn't see it. What size is it?

Your living room is amazing! You have done an incredible job. Please please tell me what the fabric is for the pillow on your round chair. Love at first sight.

christine {bijouandboheme} said...

mom 23- I can't remember the exact size but it came in two sizes and mine is the bigger one- I would say it is about 9x11.
anonymous- if you are referring to the cushion on the platner chair, I bought it on etsy- it's made from a vintage kimono.

christine {bijouandboheme} said...

Hillary- the painting in the hallway is a canvas print I found at Homesense- it was inexpensive but I love it- I'm not sure if it will stay there after the wallpaper goes up but we'll see.
B- the sofa is from Mitchell Gold- it's the Liam.
Thanks for such sweet comments everyone!

Hillary said...

Awh Thanks for letting me know - if you just can't find a new place for that painting - I think I could definitely take/buy that off your hands & find a spot.

- on a side note- I like option #2 for decorating the hallway. You could always use the new wallpaper in a bathroom - a bathroom should look just as fabulous ♥
